Marvel vs. DC – Shut Up and Enjoy Both Already

No need to grab your seats today, class. This is just a quick rant.

“Can’t we all just get along?”

Maybe not the best person to quote, but the quote itself fits perfectly for this situation. Over the last few years, up to right now, and continuing on for the near future, it has been the best time to be a geek/nerd/dork/comic book fan. We have seen the worlds we know and love come to life on the big screen, more often than not delighting the inner child in us all to heights we have never imagined possible.

So why is everyone so angry and full of hate about it?

Look, its one thing to be upset about the casting of one of your favorite characters being given to an actor you don’t like. It’s OK to not be happy that a character you feel is pivotal to a story has been altered to a new gender/race/whatever. It’s just fine to hate the look of a character you feel is iconic and to give your opinion on it. What is completely and utterly stupid is to lash out about it and to blast others for their opinion about it. Hate the way the Joker looks in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie? That’s fine, me too! But don’t spend your day finding every single article you can and leaving comments about how stupid DC is to let it happen, calling everyone who thinks it looks good morons. Most people you are taunting really don’t care what your opinion of their opinion is. And I guarantee you, DC couldn’t possibly care less. Why? Because they know full well when the movie comes out, no matter how many times you say you won’t, that you will spend the money to go see it. Plus they pay people to make/cast the characters, and it’s not you.

Also, stop claiming superiority of one product over the other. Be a fan of your favorite side, no problem. I am. It’s no secret that I Make Mine Marvel. I enjoy certain DC products (I miss me some pre-52 Lobo and need more Etrigan), but can’t really call myself a fan. One thing I don’t do, however, is say that everything DC does is crap and that Marvel crushes DC on every front. Why? Because it’s not true. And even if I were to say it, it would be an outright lie. I laugh every time I see someone posting that DC crushes Marvel when it comes to movies and that Batman vs. Superman will completely own anything Marvel has that year. It’s the same thing for people who automatically say BvS is going to flop. We’ve barely seen anything from the BvS yet, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. People flat out say everything Marvel has done in the movies is awful and sucks. If you’ve actually said that to people, you can only be trolling for a fight, because it’s just a flat out lie. How do I know it’s a lie? Because the people who say it have all spent the money to go see each and every release. If you truly thought everything Marvel puts out sucked, you’d stop paying to see anything they do.

So what I’m saying here is this: settle down. Sit back and just enjoy what they are giving us. It’s an amazing time for comic book fans, stop taking away from it by being a jackass who thinks you know better than everyone else, because you don’t. There is always someone who knows that world better than you anyway. Don’t like Iron Man? That’s ok, someone else does. Not a Batman fan? Cool, someone else out there loves him. And in every case, they are allowed to. Just let them enjoy it while you enjoy what you love. We’ll all be a lot happier.

Until next time…

Class dismissed.
