Focus & The Lazarus Effect

Hey, Folks. Just bringing you a couple of quick reviews for the close of this weekend. This week Focus and Lazarus Effect came out to a pretty dull opening. Focus topped the box office Friday bringing in only $6.5 Million. Lazarus Effect came in 5th place in the box office. That should really give you an inkling of how the movie week went… slow, really slow.

Focus

Focus, staring Will Smith and Margot Robbie is about a veteran con man, Nicky, in the midst of his latest scheme. A woman from his past – now an accomplished femme fatale – shows up and throws his plans for a loop. I was interested in this film to see the on-screen chemistry between Robbie and Smith. Since they’re going to be in the Suicide Squad movie together I’d like to see how well they’d work together. They did a decent job on screen together which makes me hopeful for the film. The Film Focus, however was pretty weak. The trailers sell it as an intense crime drama, but Focus plays itself out as a Romantic Comedy with some thrilling aspects. Think Hitch meets Ocean’s Eleven. Overall, if you need to see a film, I’d say catch this one on a matinée. Paying full price for this ticket will leave you wanting more and a little annoyed you spent the money.

The Lazarus Effect

The Lazarus Effect was probably the weakest out of the films that were in theaters this weekend. Starring Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass, this film centers on a collegiate medical team discovering a way to bring the dead back to life. This “horror” flick seeks to capitalize on what made Flatliners such an intriguing film but adds more of the supernatural to the story. What could have been an edge-of-your-seat thriller ends being a desperate attempt at a franchise. My hope is that this one fades in to the deep enough that I don’t remember I saw it. Skip this one folks. It opened in 5th place for a reason.

That’s all I got for you today folks. We’ll try to keep you up to date with the latest geek and movie news that we receive. Until then live long and prosper.
